HISTORICAL DOSSIER: THE COMPREHENSIVE RECORD OF ECHO FARM DAIRY

Nanuet and West Nyack, Rockland County, New York
An Archival, Geographic, Architectural, and Genealogical Compilation

1. GEOGRAPHIC FOOTPRINT & MODERN LANDMARKS
During its operational peak in the late 19th and early-to-mid 20th centuries, Echo Farm
(often historically referred to as Echo Farm Dairy) spanned a vast, low-lying tract of land
bridging Nanuet and West Nyack in Rockland County, New York. Its history is deeply tied
to the region’s transition from rural farming communities to suburban neighborhoods.
Today, its historic acreage can be traced across several prominent modern landmarks:
• The Production Core: Located along Dykes Park Road, which branches south off
the heavily commercialized Route 59 corridor. In mid-20th-century Clarkstown
ordinances, this road explicitly served the farm traffic and was formally mapped
and maintained as "Dykes Park Road (to Echo Farm only)."
• The Grazing Pastures: Sprawled eastward from Nanuet straight into the
lowlands of West Nyack. Following World War II, Rockland County underwent
rapid suburbanization, catalyzed by the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge
and highway expansions. In the 1950s, the construction of the Palisades
Interstate Parkway (specifically around Exit 8) sliced directly through the center
of these old fields. The tree-lined suburban streets just off modern-day
Germonds Road and Strawtown Road sit directly atop what used to be the
grazing pastures of the Rockland dairy boom.
• Natural Boundaries: The eastern edge of the property was bordered by the
Nauraushaun Brook and the marshy lowlands near modern-day South Pascack
Road, utilizing the natural waterways to sustain the dairy livestock.

2. FARM INFRASTRUCTURE & ERA BUILDINGS
During the height of the Echo Farm era (roughly 1900 to 1950), Dykes Park Road was a
rustic, unpaved agricultural access corridor bordered by wetlands to the east. Town
planning records and regional registries list the specific cluster of functional buildings
that stood on or immediately served the property:
• The Central Dairy Barn: The largest structure on the road, built with heavy timber
to shield the dairy herd during the winters. It featured lower-level milking stalls
and an expansive upper loft for storing winter feed crops grown on the
surrounding acreage.

• The Primary Milk House: Positioned close to the front entrance of the path for
quick transport. It was used to cool raw milk immediately after collection, store
insulated milk cans, and wash down delivery equipment.
• Supportive Infrastructure: Directly flanking the main barn were a matching pair
of storage silos, an ice-harvesting shed (crucial for preserving dairy products
prior to motorized refrigeration), and tool sheds for repairing farm machinery and
wagon wheels.
• The Echo Farm Homestead: A classic multi-story frame farmhouse that served
as the primary operational residence for the active farm operator's family. It
routinely provided lodging and meals for live-in farmhands and temporary day
laborers.

3. THE POST-WAR RESIDENTIAL TRANSITION & THE HUGGINS
HOUSE
By the late 1940s and early 1950s, commercial dairy operations ceased, and the vast
agricultural buildings were decommissioned. The acreage was sold off and subdivided

into residential building lots to create the modern housing tracts that define the Nanuet-
West Nyack border today.

During this immediate post-war transition, unique residential structures emerged
directly on the old farm footprints. The most notable among these is the historic
Huggins House:
• Construction & Origin: Built on Dykes Park Road in 1950, the Huggins House
stands as a physical monument to the immediate post-farm era.
• Historical Significance: It was constructed by a local citizen who famously
taught himself architectural design using instructional manuals. It represents the
first wave of mid-century residential homes that gradually replaced the old timber
barns and transformed Dykes Park Road from a private agricultural lane into a
residential community.

4. KEY HISTORICAL FAMILIES & PROPRIETORS
The Tuthill Family
In the late 19th century, J.H. Tuthill spearheaded the early commercial expansion of
Echo Farm Dairy. Historical records from regional newspapers like the Nyack Evening
Journal document Tuthill aggressively scaling up fresh milk delivery operations,
modernizing routes, and introducing early state-of-the-art mechanical innovations to
distribute milk, cream, and butter across Rockland County.
Otto Miller

Otto Miller served as the principal owner and manager of Echo Farm Dairy during its
highest era of production. Under his leadership, the business became so heavily
associated with his family name that locals and regional archival systems frequently
refer to the era interchangeably as Echo Farm Dairy or Miller's Dairy.
Regional news logs, such as a June 1940 edition of the local Journal News, document
Otto Miller's farm as a staple mention for top-tier dairy products and livestock
performance in the Nanuet, Suffern, and Spring Valley distribution circles. The most
prominent surviving visual record of the farm—preserved digitally via the Digital Public
Library of America (DPLA)—captures Otto Miller physically holding the reins of a team
of horses alongside a traditional covered delivery cart branded with the script "Echo
Farm Dairy" right before transitioning to motorized trucks.
The Dike / Dyke / Van Dyke Family (Name Resolution)
Historical archives confirm that O.D. Dike (Orlando D. Dike), listed on the 1875/1876
F.W. Beers Atlas, is the patriarch of the exact same family line that locals later referred
to interchangeably as "Dike," "Dyke," and "Van Dyke." This confusion stems from a
common 19th-century clerical variation where census takers and clerks phonetically
recorded or normalized English surnames into localized Dutch conventions.
• Orlando D. Dike (O.D. Dike): An affluent landholder and avid horticulturalist
whose country estate sat directly where the Echo Farm agricultural operations
expanded. Long after his passing, his descendants remained highly influential,
leading the Rockland County Sun Dial Garden Club and hosting community
viewings of rare plants at their West Nyack estate right next to the Echo Farm
pastures.
• Mrs. Mary S. Van Dyke: The widow/descendant of this exact lineage, listed in
early 1900s regional tourism guides (such as the 1910 Hudson River Day Line
Summer Excursion Guide) as running a country estate and boarding site near the
Bardonia/Nanuet line. Her property had a capacity for 10 to 15 summer guests,
and she utilized her close proximity to Echo Farm to supply fresh, farm-to-table
dairy directly to her seasonal city boarders.
• The Roadway Namesake: The private farm lane cutting through their family lot
lines to handle heavy milk wagon traffic was deeded to serve Echo Farm,
permanently cementing the root family name in town infrastructure books as
Dykes Park Road.

5. ARCHIVAL RESEARCH ROADMAP
Visual & Photographic Records
• The Historical Society of Rockland County (HSRC): Houses the Nanuet Milk Farm
Collection, featuring early photographs of the regional dairy delivery wagons,
processing buildings, and workers who operated simultaneously with Echo Farm.

• The Nyack Library Digital Heritage Archive: Preserves late 19th and early 20th-
century street scenes, glass-plate photographs, town ledgers, and historic

boarding house advertisements documenting the rural Clarkstown and West
Nyack landscape.
• The Library Association of Rockland County / DPLA: Features digitized historic
community scrapbooks, local farm maps, and the iconic property photo of Otto
Miller.
Census & Land Deed Records
• Federal & New York State Census Records (Town of Clarkstown):
o 1880–1900 U.S. Censuses: Documents J.H. Tuthill, registered as a
"Farmer" or "Milk Dealer," alongside live-in farmhands.
o 1910–1940 U.S. Censuses: Documents Otto Miller transitioning from a
"General Farmer" to a "Dairy Farm Manager/Proprietor," as well as
neighboring records for the Dike/Van Dyke households in District 3.

• Property Maps & Deeds:
o The F.W. Beers Atlas (1875/1876): The definitive Civil War-era map
collection showing individual "Dike," "Tuthill," and "Demarest" parcels
before the land was corporate-branded.
o Rockland County Clerk’s Office (New City, NY): Houses the physical deed
books tracking the precise chain of custody from these early agrarian
families to the post-WWII housing developers who subdivided the
pastures.

DONT WORRY - BE HAPPY MAY 2026

WHAT'S YOUR ATTITUDE ?

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts.

It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a congregation or a home.

The remarkable thing is that we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one thing we have, and that is, our attitude.

Life is about 10% of what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.

So, my attitude is to be so strong that NOTHING can disturb my God-Given peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person I meet. To make all my friends feel that there is something in them that's special.

To look at the sunny side of everything and MAKE my optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature I meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of myself that I have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the pressure of trouble. My attitude is my Life.

Love, Faithfulness and truth are the most sacred excellences of the human mind.

The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence.

However, for us to be useful to God Almighty, our Humility should always exceed our Ability.

When the circumstances look down,
always look up
